go easy on the resolutioners!

Hey all!

With the start of a new year, a lot of people make resolutions.  Losing weight and getting in shape tend to be one of the most common.  As a result, come January 1 there are a lot of newbies flooding into gyms and fitness classes everywhere.  I've noticed that every year, this year included, my facebook newsfeed has been splashed with statuses such as "you're just going to quit by february anyway, get out of my gym!" and "waited 30 minutes for a treadmill because of the resolutioners...kill me."

Today I wanted to write this post to say-- give the resolutioners a break!  We all have to start somewhere.  It's true that some, even many of these people may give up on their weight loss and fitness goals... but some won't!  Some of them will make a life change.  Some of them really WILL make this the year that they start running, or get in shape, or lose that extra 15 lbs.

I know, because last year I was one of them!  In January I started the Couch to 5k plan having never run more than a mile in my entire life.  I began week one alternating running for 60 seconds and walking for 90 seconds... and believe me, it was tough!  Now I run 2 or 3 miles without stopping and have completed 2 5ks.  Running has become a hobby of mine.  I never went more than a week and a half or so the entire year without running.  Even during finals.  Even during bar studying.  Even during the first month of my new job.

So, go easy on the resolutioners and remember when you were a gym newbie!  They're trying to do something good for themselves... not take your favorite elliptical.

  1. I totally agree!!! While not everyone can stick with their plans (life sometimes gets in the way!) I applaud the resolutioners for trying. It's not easy to take that first step!
